What you say (to yourself) matters. -Christina
What if you could learn one trick to make a big change in your daily life? Sounds too good to be true? Yet, there is something that we can do right now to make positive changes in our day to day lives.
Speak kindly to yourself!
Our minds talk and talk and talk through our thoughts. Sometimes it's about our to do list, work, family, lunch and random other things.
Sometimes the thoughts we have about ourselves are less than kind, negative and maybe even critical. How often do you tell yourself that you're not smart enough? Not attractive enough? Not accomplished enough? That you deserve the pain you are experiencing? This is called negative self- talk.
Would you speak to a friend that way? Or even allow a friend to speak to you that way? So why do we do this to ourselves?
Our thoughts and the way we speak to ourselves impacts our emotions. Therefore, if we speak negatively to ourselves, we will often feel badly.
The good news is that we can change this negative self-talk!
The first step is to be aware when you are speaking/thinking unkindly to yourself. When you identify an unkind thought, take a moment to pause and then change the thought.
For instance, instead of "I really messed up that report. I'm so stupid," try this instead. "I made an error but I learned from it and now have more knowledge than I did before."
Now make it a habit to speak kindly to your self daily. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but you will get better at it with practice.
There is science to back this up! Repeated experiences change the neural pathways in our brains. The more we practice positive self-talk, our brains will create healthier pathways, which can lead to positive change.
Speak kindly to yourself. You deserve it!
